ILAWI BIO

Ilawi Naphtali Malawi: A Legacy of Music, Faith, and Resilience

Albert Russell Johnson, known professionally as Ilawi Naphtali Malawi, is a distinguished Jamaican musician, drummer, songwriter, businessman, and Twelve Tribe member. Born on January 15, 1953, in Mavis Bank, St. Andrew, Jamaica, Ilawi’s life was shaped by early familial struggles and a series of relocations that led him to an unexpected musical path.

Early Life and Education

Ilawi was born to Gwendelyn Jackson and Victor Dixon, though due to a family dispute, his name was mistakenly registered as Johnson. As a curious and adventurous child, Ilawi faced disciplinary issues, leading to his stay at the Homestead Place of Safety in Stoney Hill from 1960 to 1964. Adopted by Albert and Louise Mahoney from Manchester, Jamaica, his time with them was short-lived. Ilawi then moved between various homes, including Saint Augustine Boys Home in Chapleton and Riocobre Boys Home in St. Catherine, before arriving at Alpha Boys’ School in 1966.

At Alpha, Ilawi’s musical journey began. He joined the Alpha Boys Band and was mentored by Sister Mary Ignatius Davies, who introduced him to music selection and drumming. Ilawi’s early exposure to music and the spiritual teachings of Rastafari led to a deeper connection with the movement. His time at Alpha was his only formal education, and he was largely self-taught, drawing inspiration from His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I.

Musical Career

In 1976, Ilawi recorded his first track as a DJ on Fred Locks’ Black Star Liner/True Rastaman, where he also played drums. Over the years, he became a sought-after drummer, contributing to over 50 albums, including works by renowned artists such as Tetrack, Sugar Minott, Dennis Brown, Augustus Pablo, and Brigadier Jerry. His signature sound was also featured in his own songs like Children of the Emperor and Redemption Rock.

Ilawi’s music was deeply influenced by his connection to the Twelve Tribe of Israel, which he joined through the Ethiopian World Federation. His performances with the Y-De-Lima Steel Band and later collaborations with Brigadier Jerry solidified his role in Jamaica’s reggae and sound system culture. His tours abroad in the 1980s, including performances in the UK, Canada, and the US, expanded his influence on the global reggae scene.

Personal Life and Philosophy

Ilawi has always been committed to self-development and supporting others. He currently serves as a selector on The Bridge 99 FM in Jamaica, where he shares his music and philosophy with listeners. His love for animals, including his cat Rascat-Aristocat-Supercat and rooster Jah Roose, reflects his grounded and humble nature. Ilawi’s message to the world is simple yet profound: “Look into yourself to find peace inside. To organize and centralize to help mankind.”

Ilawi’s dedication to charity and spiritual growth extends beyond music. He dreams of visiting Africa, particularly Malawi, to establish a non-profit organization and contribute to the community. His life reflects resilience, faith, and the belief in the transformative power of music and self-reflection.

Danny Dread Bio

Affectionately known worldwide as “King Danny Dread the Teacher”, in 2020 Jamaica’s government recognized him as “a pioneer at the actual bedrock of Jamaican music”.

The innovator of the infamous “One Drop” live mix down technique that Bob Marley sung about, Danny’s iconic mixing technique resulted from him using an original sound system tube amp as an actual instrument while operating and selecting chunes live on Jamaican Sound System, Papa
Roots. This innovation influenced the sound of a whole era of Jamaican music and is still used to mix down artists performing live on sound systems across the world today.

A producer and one of Jamaica’s most influential selectors of all time, Danny’s career overlaps with many of Jamaicas biggest reggae stars to include: Uroy, Barrington Levy, Supercat, Nicodemus, Yellowman, Burro Banton, Josey Wales, Cutty Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Dennis Brown,
Johnnie Osbourne, Gregory Isaacs and dozens more.

Bob Marley’s go to selector is a living legend sound system/sound clash king maker with a 50+year legacy of iconic sound system and Reggae Dancehall production influence.
Officially crowned king of all Jamaican selectors (twice) prior to joining King Addies in the 80’s, Danny Dread is King Addies longest tenured selector and is the key factor of the juggernaut Brooklyn sound’s rise to become America’s #1 sound.
